More about Trim Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of St Patrick, Trim, County Meath (1803)

This site has been a centre of religious activity since the 8th century. The 15th century church tower is attached to a 19th century church which was rebuilt in 1802, with further renovations in 1869 by Thomas Deane.

This Cathedral Church, in an historic setting, on an ancient site, is reputed to be older than Armagh or Canterbury. The fine stone tower is a remnant of the medieval parish Church of Trim. The tower of this church dates from the 15th century as does the remains of a 15th century chancel found in the adjoining graveyard.

On 17th March 1955 this church was hallowed as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Meath, though bishops had been enthroned there since the mid-16th century. The cathedral of the Diocese of Meath is now one of two cathedrals in the United Dioceses of Meath and Kildare, in the ecclesiastical Province of Dublin.

The present building features, in its West window, the first stained glass window that Edward Burne-Jones designed. The tower clock commemorates Dean Butler, the historian of Trim. The graveyard has headstones from several centuries to present day.
