Scala means ‘steps’. It is the name of a little village in Italy where the Redemptorists first began their work with the poor. Its name symbolises new beginnings - first steps on a journey that calls us to friendship, fairness and service. In 1988, Scala opened in Cork, and today is located near Blackrock Castle on the banks of the River Lee. It is home to Redemptorist Youth Ministry, one of the most significant providers of ministry to young people in Ireland. Each year, over 3000 students from Cork and all over Munster participate in Scala’s retreat, leadership and volunteering programmes. These are facilitated by a vibrant and committed international team, who following the same inspiration, create a space for young people to experience friendship, fairness and service.
