More about Galway / Mayo Lost and Found Animals

If you have found a dog in Galway city or county, we suggest that you do the following to search for an owner:

- Check for an I.D. Tag and call the owner, but please be careful when approaching the dog as he/she may be nervous around strange people

- Bring the dog to a vet and have it checked for a micro-chip.

- Inform the Gardai

- Contact the dog warden/pound and ask them if anyone has been looking for a dog that fits the description

- Place posters on notice boards in locals shops, schools, veterinary surgeries, community centres, churches etc.

- Put a notice on Galway Bay FM and other local radio stations

- Email dog rescue centres a picture of the dog and a contact telephone number asking them to place the details on their Facebook and website if they have the facility to do so

- Place a picture and contact details on lostdog websites www.lostdogs.ie & www.lostandfoundpets.ie

If you do not find the owner you may also decide to keep the dog yourself. In this case you must send written notification to the Dog Warden or the local Gardaí. If the dog’s owner does not claim the dog within a year you may become the owner of the dog.

If you are not in a position to keep the dog and have tried every avenue to locate the dog's owner or find an alternative solution you can call the dog warden. If you do surrender a dog to the dog warden and think that you can find a home for it please make sure to keep in regular contact with the warden/pound keeper and ask to adopt him/her once it has completed the legally required 5 days.
